Radioactive Remediation
Private Site
Project overview
Posillico Environmental handled environmental issues involving material excavation and their transportation to disposal site. The site of the project was a former fuel rod processing facility which during the 1950's had been sub divided into industrial parcels without addressing the underlying severe radioactive contamination.
What made this job complex
The site had multiple buildings that were surrounded by hazardous material that needed to be carefully collected, staged and sorted for proper disposal. In addition, excavation was required to 55ft. below grade, while working in an enclosed area. We utilized steel sheeting and 2-levels of heavy-duty steel bracing which supported the surrounding area from collapse.
How Posillico solved it
We had a staff of trained operating engineers, including scientists, who custom created excavation-underpinning methodologies. This made it possible to perform deep radiological excavation. During this phase, steel bracings were used within the confines of our tent and air handling system, which controlled the flow of hazardous airborne material. We then coordinated a successful delivery of these wastes for disposal to a facility in Utah.
