Steel Sheeting & Soldier Piles
East River
Project overview
The project consisted of installing a support of excavation system that was comprised of one hundred twenty nine drilled-in soldier piles and over one thousand linear feet of steel sheet piling. The site, which was over eight acres in size, was at the time the largest open spill for petroleum contamination the NYSDEC had in the state. The total proposed development size is over 1,000,000 sq. ft. of mixed used space.
What made this job complex
The large amount of grossly contaminated soil in close proximity to the East River and also the adjoining properties made the installation of the support system as well as the excavation of over 100,000 tons of soil extremely difficult. Working in a densely populated area as well as a major body of water we needed to safeguard the surrounding public and environment from offsite exposures.
How Posillico solved it
As excavation and drilling took place adjacent to the neighboring buildings and street we constructed a custom vapor and debris containment system that consisted of a curtain and air scrubber. The curtain was raised and lowered as needed and a portable air intake was used to capture the vapors and neutralize them prior to be released to the atmosphere. This system was successful and it ensured safety and minimized risk of contaminants from reaching the public.
