• Project Overview
The 12 acre Harbor Isle property was a former fuel oil terminal that became contaminated over decades of operating under its original use. In the early 1990's, the operator of the site went into bankruptcy and the site sat largely abandoned and polluted for over a decade. The property is a current participant in the New York State Brownfield Program.
• What made this job complex
One part of the problem was developing a suitable building program that was compatible with the adjacent residential community while also developing a sound and sustainable economic re-development plan. The job became even more complex and detailed due to two additional challenges:
1) Changes in building code relative to coastal zone and hurricane requirements; and 2) modifications of clean up objectives and developing adaptative remedial technologies to achieve a high level of clean up.

By engaging in the community early on and consistently being available during the project process, Posillico was able to build trust and transparency with its needs and needs of the community. This brought a higher quality project that will be cleaned up to the highest standards with minimal impact to the adjacent existing homes. Posillico also was an active participant in testifying to the specific needs of the Long Island Brownfield projects. This ensured that incentive legislation such as the "New York State Brownfield Clean Up Law" would provide adequate incentives and safeguards to embark on projects of this scope.
